Phonemic awareness is defined as the ability to hear, understand, and manipulate sounds, called phonemes, within words. Phonemic awareness focuses exclusively on spoken language. For example, identifying that the word "cat" is comprised of three sounds (c-a-t) is a phonemic awareness skill. Phonemic awareness is a building block to reading.
Phonics is matching the sounds of spoken words with individual letters or groups of letters. Phonics focuses on the alphabetic principle, the relationship between spoken and written language. Phonics instruction teaches common letter-sound relationships, including sounds for common letter patterns, enabling readers to decode and encode words. This is an essential skill in learning to read and write.
Each Friday, I will send home a Bridge to Reading "Peek At Our Week" page, indicating the phonemic awareness/phonics skills taught during the week and how you can support your child at home.
